Clean Water Technology Supports Hope for Haiti

Hope for Haiti’s September Operations staff meeting highlighted a key initiative within Hope for Haiti’s sustainable community development initiatives – solar powered water systems, operational at 11 sites throughout Southern Haiti. The systems benefit partner orphanages, schools, and healthcare facilities with clean drinking water – and also support Hope for Haiti’s own office, guesthouse, and Infirmary!

Still, many of Hope for Haiti’s own staff members were not fully aware of the essential impact of our clean water programming within their community. Clean Water Technician Harry Victor explained the systems’ importance for his personal health; as a diabetic patient, Harry drinks only water supplied from the General Electric system located at partner school St. Michel. The system supports the local primary school, laboratory and pharmacy, as well as over 30 additional community households each day. “For me, it is important to drink potable water to regulate sugar intake,” remarks Harry. Often in Haiti, water is treated with Clorox as a disinfectant, with sugar and salt added to mask taste. Harry also feels Hope for Haiti’s water is superior for dental care and hygiene, an especially important lesson for children benefiting from the systems.

In an integrated and holistic community development strategy, Hope for Haiti focuses our clean water initiatives on both technology and the local environment. For example, during the meeting, staff Agronomist Michel Duquai remarked that often farmers use pesticides in their fields to combat insects. During Haiti’s rainy season, fields flood-yielding rivers, farmlands, and households contaminated water. Education-both on proper water disinfectant practices and on proper reforestation techniques-will allow for healthier families throughout Southern Haiti. From Harry and all of us at Hope for Haiti, mesi anpil! Thank you!

A typical family of five should have access to at least 20 gallons of drinking water per week. A gift of only $10 will make this possible!
